Waste Smart
Project Overview
Each year, 108 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States. That equates to 130 billion meals and more than $408 billion in food thrown away each year. Anyone who cook at home experience some level of food waste and overwhelmingly report wanting to reduce this. Waste Smart is a mobile app designed to help users to track the perishables in their kitchen.
The Challenge
Users need a way to track when their food is expiring or spoiling because they are wasting food and money as they don’t have a current solution easy enough to stick with.The goal of this product was to solve a daily problem by providing an easy way to track the expiring food to reduce waste food and save money.
Hypothesis Statement
If users had an easy way to track the perishables in their kitchen, they would be able to save money and reduce waste.
Problem Statement
A waste conscious home-cook who feels guilty about food waste needs to use all the food in their home before expiring but can’t keep track of the expirations dates.
